The closing switch failed — and a high-security shop couldn't lock up

Pawn shop — retail storefront · Bronx, NY

A Bronx pawn shop's interlocking entry stopped responding to the switch staff rely on at closing time. We traced it to a shorted switch, replaced the switch and the burned fuse, and brought the system back to full operation.

Diagnosis & repair

01 · The situation

This pawn shop sits in a neighborhood where security can't be an afterthought. Its entrance uses two interlocking doors: one can only open when the other is closed, so no one gets in or out without staff being able to lock the doors down. At the end of the day, staff use a control switch as part of their closing routine — locking up, setting the alarm, and leaving for the night. That switch stopped working, and the staff couldn't close the shop the way they needed to.

02 · What we weighed

On site, we found that a failed switch had shorted and burned out the fuse on the control board. We also found a bigger underlying issue: the switch at the counter and the switch at the door were wired onto the same circuit. That shared wiring exposes the system to surges and means a fault at one switch can take down the other — it reduces the reliability of the whole entry. The durable fix is to run a dedicated cable from the control board to each switch. We recommended that, and also laid out a targeted repair to restore operation right away. The client chose the targeted repair for now.

03 · The solution

We replaced the burned fuse and the failed switch and brought the interlocking doors and closing routine back to full operation. We documented the shared-circuit issue and the recommended dedicated cable runs so the client has a clear path to the permanent fix. Total: $2,000.

04 · The outcome

The interlocking entry is fully working again, and staff can lock up and set the alarm at closing with confidence. The shared circuit is still in place by the client's choice, and the upgrade to dedicated runs is scoped and ready whenever they want to make the system more resilient.
